(There’s a haw trip in here somewhere, but still WAY not enough kayaking).

3/?/03 Eno – CM > Roxboro
3/21/03 Eno – CM > Roxboro. USGS 5.7 w/ Hank. Good level, tho things starting to wash out.

4/20/03 – Haw – 5.? Group trip with MattD, Mike, Marnie, and Scott. Banged up self in Moose Jaw thanks to Marnie
5/09/03 Fear – 5.1 USGS. Managed to trap self in hole and wet exit – rats! First time warm enough that getting wet not bad.

4/28/04 Haw 501 > Robeson at USGS 4.3. Boney but runnable.
5/4/04 Haw 501 > Robeson USGS 5.3 w/ Hank and Andrew. Pretty good; Gabriel’s would have been fun to surf has it not been a bit chill
7/30/04 Haw 501 > Robeson USGS 6.5. Finally, kayaking when it’s warm.
8/15/04 Eno Pleasant Green > West Point. USGS 3.0 a bit scrapy. A cool day, w/ very light rain. With Kurt, Andy, Carey, and not Bob.
8/31/04 Eno Cole Mill > Roxboro. Pleasant day.
9/18/04 Eno Pleasant Green to Roxboro. Starting to get cool. USGS 3.8 or so.
3/29/05 I think I’ve forgotten to put a few (but not many *sigh*) in here.
Eno Pleasant Green to Cole Mill. USGS 4.5. Cycling back from here only takes about 15 min.
4/30/06 Haw Bynum to Robeson 5′ w/ Hank. Except for the Myrtle beach trip a few weekends ago, I believe this is the longest break in kayaking.
07/07/06 Eno PG > Cole Mill. USGS 3.8. Ended up paddling w/ two other canoes I met there. Cycled for the shuttle.
07/08/06 Haw Bynum to Robeson. USGS 5.4. Paddling with 6 other CCC folks.
07/14/06 Upper Haw > PG > Cole Mill. USGS 3.3. Upper section is about 2.5 hours. Good and sunburnt. Only just enough water for the upper section. Better put in closer than 70 (bridge somewhere).
9/16/06 Cape Fear at Lillington at 4.7 and dropping. WOW this was a great level for Lunch Stop. We played there until we were both worn out.
(a little more missing stuff, but the broken foot was slowing me down)
4/16/07 Eno PG > Cole Mill.
4/17/07 Eno PG > Roxboro.
4/18/07 Haw from CB to 501 w/ Hank. Been a LONG time since kayaking 3 days in a row.
Beach Trip with Mike
10/26/07 Haw Ch Br to 501. 4′ or so (right AHEAD of the upsurge in water darn it).
12/31/07 Haw Bynum to 64 w/ Charlotte and Galen. 7′ USGS.
1/1/08 Haw Bynum to Robeson about 4.9′ with 14 others from the CCC.
3/9/08 Eno Pleasant Green to Roxboro USGS 4.2 or so. Solo. Would have been good surfing but turned cold in the middle. Time 45/35/25.
4/5/08 Eno Pleasant Green to Roxboro w/ Charlotte. 5′ USGS. This is a great level, but a bit cold at 68 and cloudy to get me to surf.
4/6/08 Eno Pleasant Green to Cole Mill w/ CCC. USGS 3.5′. Just high enough to not be scrapy. Flipped ferrying myself about, but once I was wet surfing about not such a big deal.
4/6/08 Pleasant Green to Roxboro w/ Charlotte USGS 3.0. This looks to be the 200th trip by official count (not counting the trips I lost track of).
4/9/08 Haw Bynum to Robeson. ~5.5′ USGS. Really? I mean this was pretty scrapy for 5.5′.
More kayaking that all of 2007
4/13/08 Cape Fear Lillington > Erwin. Hank. USGS 4.33. Trees in a few irritating places. New construction in Erwin – looks like an access point.
4/20/08 Cape Fear Lillington > Erwin. USGS 3.93. CCC trip. Darn it’s good to be out when it’s warm enough to play. Lunch stop was fun, but needed about 6″ more water to make the playing much better.
4/22/08 Haw Bynum to Robeson. 4.7′ and it showed. A bit scrapy but with ducking it worked out ok. Great temp. Cool but the water was warmer. Misted on Jonathan and I most of the trip, but we did take out before dark. (6:10 pm – 7:45 pm 60/35 min).
4/26/08 Cape Fear @ 2.35 USGS. Not bad. Not really able to surf in much at this point. Group trip with Marnie, Chuck, charlie, and John. Several flips (not me!), but a beautiful day (3 bald eagles!).
4/28/08 Eno Pleasant Green to Roxboro. Solo. Wow where did that water come from. USGS says ~4′, but I caught the curve on the way up and it sure seems like a lot more than that. Been a long time since I ran down past the dam. The footpath is out, and they’re building a new bridge which made the takeout river left down below mostly impassible. (40/44/20).
More kayaking than 2006 AND 2007
4/29/08 Eno Pleasant Green to Cole Mill. solo. The gauge for yesterday ended up really being ~5.5’. Today was a more normal 4. 40 min, but then again I was racing joggers.
and 2005 sadly
4/30/08 Haw Bynum to Robeson. USGS 5.5 with Garrick and Chris. funny to hear someone call this ‘low’. Garrick is without Fear
5/1/08 Haw 64 – Robeson. 4 days in a row. ~4.9 USGS. With Chris, Me, and Tina. Some great surfing at Gabe’s. Low I mean really.
05/10/08 North Fork Mayo. First descent (at least for me). ~2.5 USGS (and they said +/- 6″ ok). A step up above the Haw. Saw a fox prior, and a cool crayfish during (and got lost getting there). Boiling Hole on the Left and Dogleg to the Right!
05/12/08 Haw Bynum to Robeson USGS 4.73. w/ Garrick. Took the path less traveled and went the ways I don’t usually go.
05/18/08 Cape Fear Lillington to Erwin. USGS 4.3. Need another 4″ at Lunchstop. With Freddy (and Gil – eventually). Working on my pirouette. Gave a walking motorcyclist a ride.
05/19/08 Cape Fear (again) USGS 4.22 w/ Charlotte. Fast run as we didn’t leave until 5. In addition to the two bald eagles, also saw an otter (Charlotte could almost reach over and pet it).
06/01/08 Haw CB to Bynum. ~3.25′ USGS at Bynum. VERY VERY Low (at points walk on your hands low). With Charlotte and Bryan. Saw a Bald eagle!
Passed 2004! 2003’s going to be hard…
06/07/08 Trip to Pigeon. 14 people, led by Larry and Robin. Thunderstorm in the middle. Easier than last time (experience pays off), but you really have to know the lines. Met Todd, which lead to
06/08/08 Trip to Nantahala w/ Todd, Jeremiah, Chelsea, and Joe. Camping in the Park the night before. Flipped in the Falls. Combat rolled up but gashed up right hand.
07/03/08 WOR – Middle Ocoee. Led by Lee. Barely flipped (and rolled) in Double Suck.
07/04/08 WOR – Middle Ocoee. BIG group led by Kirt. No flips!
07/05/08 WOR – Pigeon. MUCH easier after two days on the Ocoee.
07/06/08 WOR – Nantahala with Eric and (barely) Paul (who ran it in just over an hour). Skipped the falls this time. Don’t wish for a park ranger when your tags are expired.
07/26/08 Middle Ocoee with Larry & co. Flipped in Double Trouble (rolled up just in time to not hit the sticky hole below it). Not a good day for me – got overheated and then sunburnt. Wasn’t “on”.
08/27/08 Eno Pleasant Green to West Point. ~ USGS 5.0 and climbing (hurricane weather). Still wasn’t “dark”.
09/07/08 Lower Rocky w/ Garrick and Paul. ~1.5 at the 501 gauge, Haw at Bynum about 8′ USGS. Easier that lower Haw. Weird crick in my elbow. No way to find the takeout without knowing where it is, and the walk out is LONG.
09/13/08 Cape Fear Lillington > Erwin w/ Ian. Having a flat is not a good way to start a trip, but it all worked out in the end. No eagles this time. ~ 7′ USGS. The rapids are mostly still there, but they’re hard to get into to surf, and if you do get in you get kicked out fast and far away.
09/18/08 Haw Bynum to Robeson. 6.5′ USGS. Would have been a blast if we weren’t burning daylight. Cool but the water was warm and HUMMIN’!
09/27/08 SWR class. Funny how everyone now seems to use cfs.
09/28/08 SWR Class. Does it count as a trip if you spend all day in the water … without your boat?
09/28/08 Lower Haw USGS ~ 4.8 with John. all those boaters in class, and none getting in the water. Also interesting that all day there were only 6 boaters on that section.
10/04/08 Cape Fear USGS 2.8. I’d forgotten: a) how low this is, but b) that there are still some great play spots. Some good surfing.
12/12/08 Upper Rocky (taking out at 902). Crutchfield at ~3 w/ Garrick & others. Plenty of water. Cool but sunny enough. Some big spots in here.
Passed 2003!
12/14/08 Middle/Lower Haw. USGS ~5.4, with a group of 12 CCCers. Warm enough until I was trying to play
12/21/08 Cape Fear. USGS 5.3 and climbing. Finally got Andrew out. A bit chill, but not bad.
Passed 2002! Not enough days left to pass 2001
12/28/2008 Cape Fear. USGS 3.1. Great day (tho water seemed lower). Kayaking on the way to family Xmas not world’s greatest idea tho.
38 in 2008
03/09/09 Cape Fear USGS 6.6 or so. Charlotte, Sara, Peter, Galen. 82 degrees in March? We started to late tho – it was cooling off at the end. Saw the bald eagle tho!
03/22/09 Eno at ~2.8′ w/ Charlotte. Calm lazy trip.
3/28/09 Haw Bynum > Robeson w/ Christine, Jonathan, and Kevin(?). USGS 5.42. Second trip Eno Psnt Grn to Bynum w/ Galen. USGS ~ 3.61.
3/29/09 Eno Plst Green to Roxboro. Played sheepdog for Quent, Garret and Craig for part of the day. Self-set shuttle.
04/03/09 Haw Bynum to Robeson at a surprising 6.5′ (it was more up than I thought, and on it’s way up), with John McDonald, and we plan to try it all tomorrow.
04/04/09 Haw CB to Robeson ~6.0 USGS. First try with hand paddles, and a LONG time from CB to 501.
04/05/09 Haw Bynum to Robeson ~5.3 USGS. Chris, Katie, Mark, and the Imbranis. Mark came with me for a first descent on the lower.
4/11/09 Fear USGS ~3.25. Seemed lower than recently. Water, but not zippy. With Andy on his first descent, and maiden voyage in the Jackson Fun. going to take some getting used to, and it is not so good on flat!
4/12/09 Haw Bynum to Robeson USGS 5.82 (didn’t feel that high). With Garrick, Jenn, and Paul.
4/16/09 Haw Bynum to Robeson ~5.3 USGS. Getting spoiled that this seems low. 10 person trip with Garrick and his daughter.
4/22/09 Haw Bynum to 64. Garrick & co, Casey & his wife, and John. And I thought THAT was low. 4.4 USGS. Been a LONG time since I ran it that low.
05/09/09 Wilson Creek Gorge -2″. First descent (tho I took the crossfire). Pretty good level. In theory runnable from -6″ to 12″ tho I think more than 1″ would be a lot.
05/10/09 Cape Fear 3.44 USGS. Lunch stop not really surfable at this level. Missed my roll and swam two below there!
5/16/09 Dan River at Kibler, 7500 release, 2.4 USGS. Pretty kinda like an easy Pigeon for the first section. Not hard, but tricky for someone not used to getting stuck on rocks.
5/23/09 Middle Ocoee. Rolled in Slice’n Dice. Memorial Day group trip. a Long day of lots of playing (by others).
5/24/09 Upper (incl. Olympic) Ocoee. A LOT of water (no really, a LOT). Rolled twice in Roach Motel. Group trip with Kurt, Ian, Fred, Robert, Andy, and Bret. Andy experienced Humongous first-hand. Glad they talked me into it, but not for the faint of heart, and requiring really good skills at picking where to go next.
5/24/09 Middle Ocoee. A continuation of the upper section. Ran fast to race the water running out. A Lot harder to know where the rapids are when they come up so fast. Was mostly “Read ‘n Run” for this pass.
5/30/09 Chattooga Section 3 at 2.4′ with the CCC First Descent Clinic (John Z, Lisa, John, Fred). Technically a lot more challenging, and needing to go where you plan to go. I’d hazard harder than the Ocoee (either section). Rolled in the Narrows, and thrashed in Bull Sluice (swam out).
5/31/09 Chattooga Section 3.25 at 2.2′. Rolled in Screaming Left Turn while bouncing off of Fred’s pinned boat.
6/6/09 Flat River Moores’ Mill Road to Lake Michie. ~ 3′ and dropping hard. Len, Barbara, John, John. Put-in is Moores Road just S of the county like. The busted out dam is upstream from there.
6/6/09 Eno Pleasant Green to Roxboro. 4′ at Cole Mill and dropping. With John, John, Leon.
6/7/09 Haw 501 – Robeson USGS 6.0 with JohnD.
6/7/09 Haw 501 – Robeson USGS ~5.7 with JohnD, Wayne, Leon, Len, Garrick and Aly. Saw a bald eagle
6/8/09 Haw 64 > Robeson USGS 5.6. with Wayne, charlotte and others. You can even fit a kayak in a VW Bug.
6/10/90 Eno Cole Mill to Roxboro ~ 4.7 with Chris. Warm, late run after cycling home in a rush.
6/13/09 Cape Fear Lillington > Erwin. USGS 5.9. Charlotte, Sara, and Maya. Fine level for novices. Saw the eagle. Play spot and Lunchstop hard to get to, but you can play on the secondary. Same for below glassy wave.
07/02/09 WOR Middle Ocoee. Seemed low, I think because the last time I ran it there was water from the Upper. No flips (except for carrying back up to Double Trouble, flipped and rolled 1 of 3).
07/03/09 WOR Middle Ocoee. Rolled in Double Trouble and the Watauga Move. Grr.
07/04/09 WOR Middle Ocoee. Seemed even lower – the water from the upper hadn’t gotten there yet. First day with new Werner paddle.
07/05/09 WOR French Broad from Barnard to Stackhouse with Lee and John Mc., ~870cfs. Not too hard (tho Pinball at this lower level is tight). Not quite novices tho.
8/22/09 Dan River at Kibler. 9000 release. Great day with 7 others (drive up with Wendy and Tom). Reran the gorge section.
9/12/09 French Broad Section 9. ~900 cfs. With Lee and co. Except for Pinball at this level pretty tame.
9/13/09 Upper Green @ 100%. With Lee and Fred. Scrapy. Except for Bayless Boof (which I ran twice) it’s not that much harder than the Eno at 5′, just less flat.
10/2/09 Middle Ocoee with Fred, Lee. Flipped end over end in Hell Hole before rolling up
10/2/09 Middle Ocoee with Fred, Lee. Trying something different, stalled out in Hell Hole and flipped (and rolled) surfing backwards
10/3/09 Middle Ocoee with Fred, Lee, Chris. Raft took me out in Double Suck, and then hit the hole below Double Trouble. Swam below Flipper. Not a good Ocoee day!
10/3/09 Middle Ocoee with Fred, Lee, Chris. Flipped (and rolled) above Flipper, and above Double Trouble.
10/4/09 Middle Ocoee with Fred, Lee. Flipped end over end in Double Trouble (and rolled)!
10/4/09 Middle Ocoee with Fred. Rolled in Powerhouse, darn it! 1 hr 10 min.
10/29/09 Haw Bynum to Robeson USGS 4.7 with Jennifer and Curtis. The lake was LOW; there’s a rapid there I’ve never seen.
10/31/09 Middle Ocoee with Fred, Steve, and Dan. Dan kinda needed float bags and a roll.
10/31/09* Middle Ocoee with Fred and Steve. First run with new dry-suit.
11/1/09 Middle Ocoee with Ross, Frankie, and Paul. Rolled in ‘Dice and Powerhouse. DST can cause problems when scheduling.
11/11/09* Eno with Ian and John. USGS 6.5. Mostly washed out. Got to meet Dunstan at the end!
11/12/09* Eno with Ian, Greg and John. USGS 6.2. some features coming back. Driving rain and 47 degrees still ok with dry suit (tho getting close)
11/14/09 Tar River USGS 4.7. Take out at 96. 4.7 USGS with Wayne, Leon, John, Dana, +. Eh. A little wider than the Eno, but no better.
11/14/09 Haw 501 – Robeson. USGS 6.7, with Greg’s group (incl Charlotte and John). A swim for Charlotte.
11/14/09 Haw 501 – Robeson. USGS 6.5, with John. Trip 82
48 in 2009 (13 on the Ocoee)
01/17/10 Lower Rocky. ~ 1000 cfs, 6′ Siler City gauge. Jeff, John, Kat, Brett. Warm day, but COLD water, and fog screwing up visibility making things somewhat excessively exciting. Should have worn the dry suit.
01/19/10* Eno. ~ 3.7′. OK, so that was probably dark. Trip 60.
01/20/10* Haw CB to Robeson. USGS 5.5’. John and I (adding Garrick, Wayne, Josh, and Allie at 64). Love the dry-suit.
01/25/10* Eno Lawrence Road to Cole Mill. USGS 7.5 with John. The water moving made up for long flat spots. Fews Ford mostly washed out.
01/28/10* Haw Bynum to Robeson with John. ~ 5.8. Bald Eagle!
3/14/10* Haw Bynum to Robeson with John, Kevin, Eddie USGS 6.8
3/14/10* Haw Bynum to Robeson with John, Kevin. USGS 6.5
3/14/10* Haw Bynum to Robeson with John. USGS 6.0. Flipped (and rolled)!
3/20/10* French Broad Barnard to Hot Springs with Leon and Beent and families. ~3200 cfs. With Crossfire, tho overstated. Nothing here really big at this level, tho didn’t see Kayaker’s Ledge, and Bell’s looked impressive from the bottom. Sun went away, and learned I should have worn the dry-suit.
3/30/10* Lower Rocky @ 2′ w/ Garrick.
3/30/10 Haw Bynum to Robeson @ ~ 7.1′ w/ Garrick. Not all that challenging at this level. Ran into Larry, Kevin, John on their 2nd lower lap
4/01/10 Haw Bynum to 64 @ 5.75′ w/ Garrick, Casey, and kids. 2 bald eagles
4/3/10* Nolichucky Gorge at ~ 2100 cfs. Reminds me of the upper Ocoee. Easier but more technical than the Middle Ocoee. Moderately big. Paddled with Garrick, Carol, and Larry A as part of Larry S. group. Trip with the dislocated shoulder.
4/4/10* Wilson Creek at -4″ w/ Larry A. Good drubbing/roll in Hidden Eddy. Can run in a play boat, just don’t miss the lines.
4/4/10* Wilson Creek at -4″ w/ Larry A. Was tired this time, more close calls. Boat kept filling with water (cracks).
5/1/10 Novice group trip down the Cape Fear at a low 1.66. Found cracks in my boat, a hole in my spray skirt, and the strap on my helmet broke. Not a cheap trip!
5/18/10 Eno Pleasant to Roxboro. USGS 5.5 with John, Ian, and Marcus. Confused everyone by running it in the morning. First trip with the new Hero.
5/19/10 Haw USGS 5.7 (Hero). I like this level, tho the Hero makes it not much of anything. John, Kevin, and Andy.
5/19/10 Cape Fear USGS 5.0. Hero. With Allen. A good level, but a little lower would I think be better for surfing. Cracked the Yahoo.
5/30/10 Upper Ocoee with Kurt, Brett, Jim, Jade, Paul.
5/30/10 Middle Ocoee. Talked Brett into making a longer day of it. A LOT of water that day. rain and upper assisting. The Hero is a GREAT boat for lots of water.
5/31/10 Middle Ocoee. w/ Craig, Ben, Daniel, Melissa, and Kim. Kinda of mess with the shuttle at the end.
5/31/10 Middle Ocoee. Again with just Craig, Ben, Daniel.
6/5/2010 Middle Ocoee. w/ Fred, Larry, Leslie, Chip, John. First trip out for the replacement Fun. Took the Hero as a “safety”, but never needed it
6/5/2010 Middle Ocoee. w/ Fred, Larry, John, Chip
6/5/2010 Middle Ocoee w/ Fred. Wearing out all the people, and Fred wouldn’t do a 4th lap.
6/6/2010 Middle Ocoee. Definitely low this day, and felt kinda off. Failed the Watauga Move and swam out of it (after sliding over the ledge on my head).
6/12/10 Upper Pigeon. Kevin, John, Lee, Ian. This is WILDLY easier than I remember it. Lot of years and water gone by
6/12/10 Upper Pigeon. Kevin, John. I get a lot more aggressive when I know where I’m going, AND I think it’s easier.
6/13/10 French Broad ~1500 cfs. Kevin, Lee, John, Jim. Love that play wave. 1st descent of Kayaker’s Ledge; clean run of Bells.
6/17/10 Middle Haw USGS 5.5. Galen and Allen (and Randy!). Great boof by Allen. Bald Eagle. WARM water mmmm.
